Freighter Cruises –
Adventure On The High Seas

A lot people think of taking cruises. Most don't even consider travel by freighter.

If you're looking for something exciting and a bit different, why not consider a freighter cruise?

What are freighter ships?

Freighter ships, sometimes called tramp freighters or tramp vessels, transport goods from one country to another. There are freighter ships in nearly every major port in the world. And where you find freighter ships you'll find freighter cruises.

What’s the difference between tramp freighters and freighter ships?

Both regular freighter cruises and tramp cruises tend to last between 40 to 50 days, though the shortest voyage is about a week.

  • Although both tramp freighters and regular freighter ships often provide freighter cruises, tramp freighters don’t have standard routes or schedules.

  • Typically, tramp freighters stay in port longer - and leave more quickly - than freighter ships.

The drawback of taking a freighter cruise aboard tramp vessels is that because of their nature it's harder to plan in advance.

Accommodations on board freighter cruises.

  • The cabins of freighter cruises tend to be outstanding, because they were designed for members of the shipping company and the ship's officers.
  • Typically they are well furnished well.

However, before you book your cruise, consider getting a cabin located on one of the upper decks. That way you’ll avoid having containers obstruct your view.

Size does Matter in Freighter Cruises

When voyaging via freighter cruises, the size of the ship matters. In fact, it is a vital consideration when you select a ship for your freighter cruises.

Smaller freighters usually haul fewer than a thousand containers, and their lengths are usually below 500 feet.

  • The movement of these ships, known as the pitch and roll, typically is greater on these vessels than on larger freighters.

Meanwhile, the hugest freighter can exceed 1,300 feet in length. They have the capacity to move roughly 12,000 containers.

  • Although these vessels are more stable than smaller ones, their engines create more carbon. This can result in decks that are slightly grimier.

Entertainment

For the most part there is no formalized on board entertainment - aside from watching DVDs and chatting with other people. So make sure to bring some good books and/or other kinds of entertainment along with you.

The Cost Of The Cruise

Like the size of the ships and their cabins’ amenities can vary, so does the cost of freighter cruises.

In general, though:
  • Tramp freighter trips typically are the least expensive ones.
  • Although a single person who books a double cabin pays more than individuals paying for double occupancy, freighter cruisers tend to penalize single occupants less than traditional cruisers do.
  • If it’s apropos, remember to convert the price of the cruise into your own currency.
  • Keep in mind that fares for various ships along the same route can differ significantly.
  • Finally, additional charges can include deviation insurance, customs charges, and port taxes. Find out what they are before you pay your money.

While you must pay the entire cost of freighter cruises, you can skip any part of the trip you want. In fact, a lot of people do. Even if it's one of the freighter world cruises, you can get off wherever you want.

If you have the proper documentation, (and you should never travel without it) you can disembark at any port. From there you can take another ship or take a flight back home.

You only live once. Why not embrace some of the more exotic experiences that life has to offer?

Freighter cruises will give you a unique travel experience on the high seas that you will never forget!
